“Maybe” is a word with great power.  “Maybe” is Hope.  And “Hope” is a sudden dawning of an idea.  It is eyebrows slowly raised as a new way of thinking comes to light.  It is the brightness in children’s eyes — and the dog’s, too — when you tell them “maybe” because to them, that means there is still hope for the awaited outcome!WhoWreath

There is no greater story telling of Hope than Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.  Really.  You laugh, but I’m serious.

You know the story — and if you don’t, or can’t remember, give yourself a lift and look up the beautific poetry of the Good Doctor, Ted Geisel.

But this, this is the passage, out of all the pages, that has always meant the most:

And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,

Stood puzzling and puzzling; “How could it be so?”

“It came without ribbons! It came without tags!”

“It came without packages, boxes or bags!”

And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.

Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before!

“Maybe Christmas,” he thought,

“doesn’t come from a store.”

“Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”

Grinch puzzlilngMaybe…Perhaps……Hope.

Hope dawns right there on the side of Mt. Crumpit.

The hope that — maybe, perhaps, could it be? — there is more goodness than we ever dared dream…

Hope is what moves the Grinch to save his ever-loving and forgiving dog (are there any other kind?), Max, and to return to Who-ville — not only to give back what he’d taken — but in hope the Whos will accept him, despite all that came before.

That crazy rope we grope for when it seems we have nothing left in reserve.

beautific GrinchHope is what makes our hearts grow three sizes in one day.

Hope let’s us do great things, and small things, and things we don’t know if they matter to someone else.

Hope is a word of positive possibilities.

And if we let Hope drive us in those uncertain times, we can only win because we are moving toward those positive possibilities.  Hold on to it.  Hold out for it.  Give it.  It is what begins in the dark. It is grief’s best music.  It is the thing with feathers.  It is a phoenix that rises from Whos down in Whovilleashes.

And once you choose it, anything is possible.

Until Friday, Friends.  Cheers to Hope!
